請依下文回答第 46 題至第 50 題

For decades inflation was the bogeyman in rich countries. But now some economists reckon that deflation, or falling prices, may be a more serious threat—in America and Europe as well as Japan. That would be decidedly awkward, given the surge in borrowing by firms and households in recent years. Particularly worrying is the rise in borrowing by American households to finance purchases of houses, cars or luxury goods. Deflation would swell the real burden of these debts, forcing consumers to cut their spending.

Deflation is not necessarily bad. If falling prices are caused by faster productivity growth, as happened in the late 19th century, then it can go hand in hand with robust growth. On the other hand, if deflation reflects a slump in demand and excess capacity, it can be dangerous, as it was in the 1930s, triggering a downward spiral of demand and prices.

Today, both the good and bad sorts of deflation are at work. Some prices are falling because of productivity gains, thanks to information technology. But the weakness of profits suggests that most deflation is now bad, not good. Deflation is particularly harmful when an economy is awash with debt. Total private-sector debt is now much higher than when deflation was last experienced in the 1930s. Falling prices not only increase the real burden of debt, they also make it impossible for a central bank to deliver negative real interest rates, because nominal rates cannot go below

zero.

If deflation causes real debts to swell, debtors may have to cut spending and sell assets to meet their payments. This can unleash a vicious spiral of falling incomes, asset prices and rising real debt. Irving Fisher, an American economist, described this process in a famous article in 1993 entitled “The Debt-Deflation Theory of Great Depressions”. He described how attempts by individuals to reduce their debt burden by cutting costs could paradoxically cause their debt burden to swell. Unable to increase prices to boost profits, firms have to cut costs, either by reducing labour costs and hence household income or by buying less from other firms. This is sensible for an individual firm, but it reduces demand in the economy, thwarting the desired improvement in profit, leading to another round of cuts and putting further downward pressure on prices.

(A)46 The word “bogeyman” is used to express that inflation was

(A)frightening (B)well studied (C)not a problem (D)surprising

(B)47 The primary purpose of this passage is to

(A)inform what happens when price level rises

(B)inform how dangerous it could be when price level goes down

(C)compares between inflation and deflation

(D)48 Under what situation would deflation not be a threat to the society?

(A)When product availability exceeds people’s demands

(B)When firms are borrowing money from the banks for business

(C)When people are borrowing to purchase houses

(D)When it is caused by faster productivity growth

(C)49 According to the passage, what does downward spiral of demand and prices refer to?

(A)the prices go up but the demand goes down

(B)the prices go up but the demand goes up

(C)the prices go down but the demand goes down

(D)the prices go down and the demand goes up

(C)50 Which of the following is NOT true of deflation?

(A)Deflation could be both good and bad.

(B)Deflation could cause real debts to swell.

(C)The surge in borrowing by firms and households causes deflation.

(D)Both the good and bad sorts of deflation can be seen today.

請依下文回答第 46 題至第 50 題

In general, the influence of Anglo patrons has been much less pronounced on Hispanic arts than on American Indian arts. The art forms practiced by the early Hispanics were shaped largely from resources they found in their natural environment. Using native woods such as aspen or pine, paints derived from natural pigments, and other local materials, they created utilitarian goods and religious objects to adorn their homes and churches. The Hispanic crafts revival was confined to a much shorter period of time: beginning in the early 1920’s, reaching its peak in the late 1930’s, and dying down by World War II, less than 20 years. During this period, in spite of the enthusiasm of the wealthy Anglo patrons in northern New Mexico, Hispanic crafts never “caught on” nationally in the way American Indian crafts did. Interest was fairly well limited to the Southwest and Southern California, the areas in which the Adobe hacienda revival was taking place. The major interest in Hispanic crafts was as furnishing for these comfortable Southwestern-style adobe homes. These crafts were not, as were American Indian crafts, viewed as valuable art objects in themselves purchased with an eye for speculation. Hispanic arts to a great degree have been ignored by the

speculative Anglo art market.

A beneficial consequence of this oversight is that the artisans have been freer to work according to their own standards and within their own traditions. Ranging from carved images of saints, furniture and textiles, to works in tin, iron, silver and straw, the art of the Spanish colonial era remains the art of many families who have practiced the traditional techniques for generations. Meanwhile, other contemporary Hispanic artists have carried the artistic legacy of their ancestors to new levels of excellence by working in more modern media including sculpture, photography, painting, jewelry, literature and more that reflect the ongoing evolution of Hispanic arts and culture. Though modern and contemporary, their work has not been “emptied of previous vital meanings” and become a meaningless revival, as has so much ethnic art of this day. Rather it has remained as an object of cultural pride and identity and not simply the product of the tastes and demands of art market.

(B)46 According to this passage, during which of the following periods were Hispanic crafts most popular?

(A)The early 1920’s.             (B)The late 1930’s.

(C)In the middle of World War II. (D)At the end of World War II.

(B)47 What does it mean when the author says that Hispanic crafts never “caught on”?

(A)It was difficult to hang the crafts on walls.

(B)The crafts failed to become fashionable.

(C)The crafts seldom stayed glued together.

(D)It was impossible to understand the crafts.

(C)48 What does “it” in the last sentence of the passage refer to?

(A)The clay. (B)Ethnic art. (C)Their work. (D)The revival.

(A)49 Which of the following places is NOT mentioned as a place in which Hispanic crafts were popular?

(A)New England.         (B)The Southwest.

(C)Southern California. (D)Northern New Mexico.

(A)50 What does this passage mainly discuss?

(A)Evolution of Hispanic arts.

(B)Marketing strategies for Hispanic artists.

(C)Influence of Hispanic arts on Anglo artists.

(D)American Indian influence on Hispanic crafts.

Lagom is a new lifestyle that comes out of Sweden into our homes and our lives in the hope of helping us become healthy and live a sustainable life. The Swedish word is defined as “not too much, and not too little—just right.” This ethos of moderation has a great impact on Swedish people, who believe there should be a balance in everything they do, from working hours to how many slices of cake they eat, from how much sugar to take in one coffee to the portion sizes of dinner. Now people all over the world are interested in this living philosophy. Over the past six months, the BBC reports that search engine Google has seen a steady increase in the number of searches for the term Lagom and in the last three months, the word has been tweeted over 13,500 times.

My Swedish friend told me “asking a Swede about lagom is like asking a fish what water is. It’s part of our way of life. There’s an inner voice saying, ‘Don’t be too talkative, but don’t be too quiet or shy. Don’t build the biggest house in town and buy luxurious stuff, but don’t be poor.’”

Lagom has inspired several companies to manufacture skin collections, clothing, and furniture based on this notion of making life easier, more enjoyable and inexpensive. Swedish furniture store IKEA, for example, has created a project called “Live Lagom” to teach people how to reduce waste, save water, and live a healthier life. The famous H&M also sells Lagom around the world. Everybody can afford to buy their products, which are functional, stylish, and nice, but not too nice. Sam and Elliott Stocks, from England, published the lifestyle magazine Lagom. “Although neither of us are Swedes, we admire Swedish culture,” says Elliott. “The philosophy of Lagom is beautifully simple; it encourages everything in moderation.”

(C)46 What is the best title for this passage?

(A)An Urgent Global Issue.      (B)A Beautiful Life Journey.

(C)A New Trend to Keep Up With. (D)An Ancient Culture to Be Preserved.

(B)47 According to the passage, which is NOT one of the features of H&M's clothing?

(A)Affordable. (B)Expensive. (C)Fashionable. (D)Functional.

(B)48 Which word is closest in meaning to the word “ethos” in the first paragraph?

(A)Process. (B)Spirit. (C)Failure. (D)Memory.

(A)49 What does “asking a fish what water is” in the second paragraph imply?

(A)Swedes cannot live without lagom.

(B)Lagom has a negative influence on Swedes.

(C)A large part of Sweden is surrounded by the sea.

(D)Swedes don't spend money on unnecessary things.

(C)50 Which of the following statements is true about Lagom?

(A)It was created by the furniture store IKEA.

(B)The word has not appeared on tweets until the last three months.

(C)It encourages people to pursue both simplicity and quality.

(D)It means that everyone should enjoy life without concern for the future.

A trip to the art museum could have turned into a very costly trip for a 12-year-old boy in Taipei when he lost his balance and put his hand through a painting worth around $1.5 million. The damaged work, “Flowers” by Italian master Paolo Porpora, was part of a Taipei exhibition of artwork by or influenced by Leonardo da Vinci. Porpora was a    41    still life artist who produced baroque-style paintings, often of fruit and flowers. The work was 200cm tall, depicting flowers in a vase. The film    42    by the organizers of the “Face of Leonardo: Images of a Genius” exhibition shows the boy – in shorts, sneakers, a blue T-shirt and holding a drink – walk past the painting, catching his foot and stumbling over. He looks up at the painting, shown later to have a fist-sized gash at the bottom. The boy    43    , looking around at other people in the room. Organizers did not believe that the boy intentionally vandalized the oil painting, saying that it was obvious that the boy did not mean to push it.“All 55 paintings in the venue are    44    pieces and they are very rare and precious,” a post on the exhibition’s Facebook page said. “Once these works are damaged, they are permanently damaged.” Nevertheless, the exhibition organizers decided not to    45    the boy for the damage and said that the painting could be easily restored. This incident, however, made them reconsider displaying valuable paintings in the open.

Maritza, a professional yoga trainer, is one of almost 100,000 users of Bliive-a Brazil-based website that brands itself as the world’s largest online time-exchange platform. Bliive looks and feels like a social media platform. Its users trade services, including guitar lessons, air conditioner repairs and tarot card readings, without any cash or credit card transactions. For each hour of service provided, the user receives Time Money, with which they can buy another service. Maritza earned almost 40 hours’ worth of Bliive services. With that much Time Money, she was able to create her own website about breathing techniques, including her own branding. Each person offers his help in one-hour chunks, and people who have “exchanged” Time Money can rate and review the quality of the service provided.

Bliive was founded a year and a half ago by Lorrana Scarpioni, a 24-year-old public relations student. She now employs a team of about a dozen people in Sao Paulo. She came up with the idea after watching documentaries about the sharing economy and alternative currencies. “If people were willing to engage in couch surfing-letting complete strangers into their houses-surely there was a potential for exchanging something as simple as one hour of a service,”Lorrana says. “Bliive is a collaborative network of time exchange. We see this platform as a movement that shows people the real value of exchanges and how they can develop themselves this way.”

Bliive takes the concept of the sharing economy-popularized by platforms including Uber and Airbnb-a step further. It creates a new channel between the supply and demand of services, and does away with conventional cash altogether. More than 90,000 services are on offer on the website, making it larger than other barter-based sites. “The no-money-involved transferences can be a great alternative to keep people developing themselves. We see a lot of people who have graduated with very nice degrees, but they don’t have jobs,” she says. While Bliive aims to become more profitable, Lorrana is keen to retain its core values. “We use these talents and values to create a world that is more collaborative and less competitive, more focused on the value of people, not just the value of money,” she says.

(C)46 According to this passage, what is true about Bliive?

(A)Its users trade currencies around the world.

(B)Its users learn to compete for Time Money.

(C)Its users do collaborative network of time exchange.
